Travel + Leisure Editorial Guidelines Updated on May 14, 2024 Fact checked by Elizabeth MacLennan Photo: Courtesy of Enchantment Resort Sedona, Arizona is known for its breathtaking scenery, colorful red rock formations, and the natural healing that comes from its peaceful hiking trails. Earlier this year I took a hiking getaway, staying at Amara Resort and Spa, and came back feeling refreshed and rejuvenated — there’s just something about the land. Although it’s a small town with a population under 10,000, almost 3 million people visit the expansive desert destination each year. While the city is best known for its outdoor activities, with many state parks, trails, and offerings like horseback riding, the abundance of luxe properties provide much-needed tranquility. The best stays offer short commutes to adventures, professional spas, and top-tier rooms and cuisine. We’ve compiled this list of the best resorts in Sedona based on a combination of our firsthand experience, editor-loved properties, and winners of our World’s Best Awards and It List. Keep reading to discover our top picks. Enchantment Resort Enchantment Resort Book Now Also available to book at Kayak.com What We Like It has just about everything you could want in a Sedona getaway, from pickleball to close-by hiking. It has two restaurants, Che Ah Chi and Tii Gavo, offering Southwestern cuisine along with a poolside bar and a grab-and-go market. If you’re looking to test your physical limits while visiting Sedona, the Trail House serves as your one-stop shop for mountain biking, trail running, rock climbing, and more with guides and equipment rentals. When it’s time to wind down, enjoy a number of family-friendly pursuits like lawn games, arts and crafts, and stargazing. The Enchantment Resort has everything you could want and more. What to Consider Mii Amo is best for individuals or couples rather than families. Nestled in one of Sedona’s four vortex sites, Mii Amo offers one of the most thoughtful resort experiences available. Every room at this resort has heated bathroom floors, luxury linen sheets, a fireplace (or two), and luxury bathing essentials. The Casita-style accommodations even have a private outdoor space to view nature undisturbed. Mii Amo takes dining to the next level; its culinary team uses the freshest ingredients and will tailor recommendations specifically to your preferences or dietary needs. The signature restaurant, Hummingbird, sources seasonal produce from the Chef’s Garden and nearby farms with the goal of reducing food miles and waste. The juice bar, in-room service, and poolside dining provide additional nourishment for all of your Sedona activities. Mii Amo also offers personal fitness and nutrition coaching to help deepen your wellness routine in addition to a packed daily schedule of workouts and classes. But if there were an exception, it would be the newly renovated Mii Amo. Architects Gluckman Tang (known for their work on cultural institutions like the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City) designed each of the spaces to heighten the awareness of nature, encouraging exploration both outwards and inwards.” – Lisa Cheng, T+L Contributor L’Auberge de Sedona LâAuberge de Sedona Book Now Also available to book at Expedia.com What We Like It is located in one of the most unique and beautiful spots in all of Sedona. What to Consider The on-site restaurant can be pricey and the portions tend to be small. L’Auberge de Sedona consistently ranks as one of the top resorts in Sedona. It’s right on the banks of Oak Creek which boasts a serene ambience. Its Cress on Oak Creek restaurant offers a scenic dining experience, with hints of European flavors and techniques throughout its breakfast, lunch, and dinner schedule. It’s no wonder this resort has been around since 1984 — the spa offers natural healing experiences and a wide range of massage and skin care routines. Nearby attractions allow you to experience the full beauty of Sedona in a matter of minutes. Rent an ATV or buggy for a rugged off-road ride or get a round of golf in at the historic Oak Creek Country Club, to name just a few things that are within easy reach. It’s one of those places where you truly feel immersed in nature — which is exactly how you want to feel in a place like Sedona, where the natural landscape is the reason to visit. My mom, my dog, and I stayed in a Creekside Cottage, where our cozy fireplace and four-poster bed would have made it difficult to leave, if not for the beckoning sounds of Oak Creek just beyond our front porch. Waking up to the serene sound of water trickling over the red rocks every morning was invigorating, and we loved the daily outdoor activities, from yoga to stargazing. Don’t neglect to book a candle-lit table at Cress on Oak Creek, a fine dining experience that once again lets the resort’s natural surroundings take center stage.” –Nina Ruggiero, Senior Editorial Director Amara Resort and Spa Amara Resort and Spa Book Now Also available to book at Hotels.com What We Like It balances luxury with practicality in perfect measure. What to Consider The spa is accessible to the public, so it’s best to book appointments weeks in advance. When I stayed at Amara Resort and Spa earlier this year I didn’t realize it would be anything beyond merely a hotel with a nice view — it turned out to be so much more than that. The grounds offer a secluded tree-lined experience with a perfect view of Sedona’s vast landscape. SaltRock Southwest Kitchen offers a versatile, modern assortment of clean dishes and elevated drinks both day and night. Need to fire off a few emails? The rooms offer a spacious office with a desk and plenty of outlets and peace and quiet to help you focus. Relax at the outdoor pool and hot tub with poolside beverage service before you head to the spa for a stress-relieving massage or powerful body treatment. Finally, the resort shuttle service can take you just a few minutes up the road to a strip of restaurants and bars, or opt for the use of complimentary resort bicycles. The drive from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (where you’ll find the most flights and best rates) is about two hours away and getting an Uber or Lyft can be quite difficult and expensive. Most resorts offer free parking and many of them have a shuttle service from your resort to the downtown area and back. Remember to pack layers Because Sedona is a desert town, expect temperatures to drop drastically at night. Bring base layers, fleece jackets, and potentially even insulated down jackets during the colder months. Especially if you’re going to be relaxing outside or going on a night hike, it’s important to bring long sleeves and warmer outfits. Look for resorts with restaurants Shops and restaurants in downtown Sedona are known to close down early, often by 9 p.m. – this is known as “Sedona midnight.” When searching for your resort, try to find one with quality dining and bar options as there isn’t a true nightlife in the town and other towns are a far drive. Expect higher rates during peak season Sedona’s busiest seasons are between March and May and from September to November because of the ideal temperatures and scenery. This means that resort rates are highest in the spring and fall. If you’re looking for the best deal and don’t mind hot weather, consider booking your stay for sometime between June and August. How We Chose These Hotels Picking the best Sedona resorts isn’t an easy task as there are so many great options, each with its own spin on a Red Rocks getaway.
