The Best Hotels in Savannah, Georgia

Plan your stay with these editor-loved and T+L award-winning properties.

I first stumbled upon Savannah on a college road trip, and it was love at first sight: the picturesque squares, cobblestoned streets, and violinists in Forsyth Park left me instantly charmed. The lenient open container laws helped, too.

Now, what keeps drawing me back time and time again is the unique energy, and the blend of history and modernity, which defines every aspect of Savannah. The intricate ironwork on historic buildings, the grand oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and the stately mansions all contribute to the feel of a city with infinite stories to tell. Beyond the architecture, the city’s rich food scene is a testament to its diverse and vibrant culture, with each meal offering a new adventure.

Savannah’s slightly eerie atmosphere adds yet another layer to its allure, with some of the best B&Bs and hotels in the city rumored to be haunted by their very own resident spirits. Modern, spacious hotels along the waterfront are also available – sans ghost stories – if that’s not really your thing.

Whether it’s the moments spent savoring a steaming bowl of shrimp and grits, or taking a twilight stroll through one of its squares, Savannah has a way of making each visit feel special. There’s a reason why it's known as “the hostess city of the South,” and these are the best hotels to demonstrate just that on your next trip there, based on editor-loved properties and winners from T+L’s World’s Best Awards and exclusive It List.

Why I’m the Expert

Since then she’s been back numerous times, always making sure to discover new corners of the city and experience everything Savannah has to offer, from its top-notch hospitality to its spookier side, and beyond.

What to Consider
  • It’s one of the pricier options in Savannah.

Hotel Bardo is one of the newer additions to the Savannah hospitality scene, and yet it already feels like it's been there from the start. It might be the inspiration Bardo takes from the grand hotels of the past, or its unfussy-yet-luxurious atmosphere. Either way, it earned the hotel a spot on the Travel + Leisure It List 2024, arising as a sophisticated oasis in the historic city.

Hotel Bardo’s carefully curated design combines sleek, natural elements with warm tones, creating a sense of calm that permeates the entire property. For an even greater sense of calm, their Saltgrass Spa offers signature facials and massages as well as IV Therapy (perfect after a night on the town) and personal training.

“Savannah is known for its antebellum architecture, its Southern hospitality — and its fabled ghosts. And now there’s a luxury resort that channels all three. Opened in February, Hotel Bardo Savannah occupies a Southern Gothic terra-cotta mansion on Forsyth Park, 30 acres of green space surrounded by historic homes and Spanish-moss-draped oak trees. During a pre-dinner stroll, I wandered the streets of restored Victorian homes without seeing a single bachelorette party or a horse-drawn carriage (common sights in the city’s more touristy areas to the north). On my return, the hotel beckoned like an urban oasis, with friendly valets in olive green uniforms welcoming me back by name.”

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

What We Like
  • A charming, historic inn, the Hamilton-Turner offers an intimate, luxurious escape in the heart of Savannah's famous Historic District.

What to Consider
  • As a boutique property, the on-site amenities may feel more limited compared to larger hotels.

Disney lovers might recognize this historic property, which was rumored to be Walt Disney’s original inspiration behind the theme park’s famed Haunted Mansion attraction (it is also said to be haunted). An iconic gem located on Lafayette Square in Savannah's Historic District, it blends Southern hospitality with Victorian elegance.

Despite being housed in a grand mansion built in 1873, it has an intimate and romantic vibe that doesn’t feel dusty or particularly stuffy. Its design captures a rich, historic feel with period details, original fireplaces, and antiques that evoke the charm of 19th-century Savannah, while still feeling clean and open. The 17 rooms are all unique, but find a common thread in luxurious touches like soaking tubs and elegant decor. Some boast fireplaces, and there is also the three-bed, three-bath James Turner Carriage House that can be reserved.

We love that guests can enjoy a complimentary gourmet breakfast, wine receptions in the afternoon, and fresh-baked cookies at night, adding a homey touch to the experience. The serene, garden-filled setting and close proximity to Savannah's landmarks like Forsyth Park and the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist makes it ideal for exploring the city, or guests can post up to enjoy the hotel's unique features, like a gorgeous sitting room and spa.

  • Despite being housed in a historic building, the Drayton offers modern luxury in an excellent location, offering views of the Savannah River and a speakeasy-style vinyl bar.

What to Consider
  • For travelers seeking classic Savannah charm or a historic feel, they might consider the interiors at the Drayton a bit too contemporary.

Nestled in the heart of Savannah's Historic District, The Drayton Hotel masterfully blends Southern hospitality with contemporary design. Housed in a restored 19th-century building, the hotel offers surprisingly color-drenched decor, with an open, airy lobby full of foliage. Each room is tastefully designed with a chic, modern aesthetic, and features high ceilings, large windows, and luxurious finishes, along with smart TVs and high-end toiletries. The Pendant Terrace is another highlight, offering panoramic views of the Savannah River and the city skyline — an ideal spot for sunset cocktails.

Guests can dine at the on-site restaurant, St. Neo’s Brasserie, which offers a raw bar and a seasonal menu inspired by local flavors and the Lowcountry. Know Before You Go

Savannah has an open container policy

Unlike many other cities in the U.S., Savannah permits the consumption of alcohol in public spaces within the Historic District, including streets and parks, as long as the alcohol is in a plastic container. Just keep in mind that glass containers are prohibited, so it’s best to sip your libations out of a cup. This open container law is also strictly enforced within certain areas and times, so make sure to check local regulations to avoid fines or penalties.

Savannah is very walkable

Savannah is one of the most walkable cities in the country with 22 beautiful squares and countless cobblestone streets. If you’re planning on spending most of your time in Savannah proper, skip the rental car and opt to explore the city on foot, taking in its well-preserved historic architecture and meandering through Forsyth Park and River Street. Walking tours, especially ghost tours, are a popular way to experience the city's history and haunted past.

Hilton Head Island is only an hour away

Hilton Head Island, just an hour's drive from Savannah, Georgia (they even share an airport), offers an excellent opportunity for a charming day trip during a visit to Savannah. Known for its relaxed beaches, upscale resorts, and abundant outdoor activities, Hilton Head Island provides a perfect complement to time spent in Savannah. Enjoy a relaxing day on the island’s sunny shores, explore its extensive network of bike trails, or try out some water sports and golf.

Savannah is a great choice for spooky-season travel

Known as one of the most haunted cities in the U.S., Savannah is filled with ghost stories and paranormal legends. Whether you're staying in a haunted hotel like the Olde Harbour Inn or joining a ghost tour in one of the city's historic cemeteries or old mansions, embracing Savannah’s spooky side is a unique experience (if you dare).

How We Chose These Hotels
